A walk in the Jardin des Serres d’Auteuil

Less famous than the Jardin des Tuileries or the Jardin du Luxembourg, the Jardin des Serres d'Auteuil is a haven of peace on the edge of the Bois de Boulogne. This botanical garden and major greenhouse complex boasts five large and distinctly elegant greenhouses arranged around an impressive French-style central parterre. Remarkable trees and rare species as well as sculptures and elegant architecture are all part of the charm of this peaceful green space at the gates of Paris.

A place steeped in history

The history of the Jardin des Serres d’Auteuil dates back to 1761, when Louis XV decided to create a botanical garden near the Porte d'Auteuil that would have greenhouses to protect the more climate-sensitive species. A century later, the place was taken over by the City of Paris and turned into a horticultural garden that would provide all the Parisian green spaces and various municipal buildings with plants. It was at that time that the large, elegant, blue-painted cast iron framed greenhouses that we can see today were created. The garden is adorned with a beautiful fountain that has a Bacchanalia sculpted by Dalou. The retaining walls of the terrace are embellished with cast iron mascarons made by Rodin. Today, the Jardin des Serres d'Auteuil retains its horticultural vocation but is also used for educational purposes and as a delightful place in which to stroll. It fits harmoniously into the development project of the nearby Roland Garros Stadium, with the new Simone Mathieu court being surrounded by six contemporary greenhouses, thus merging the spaces.

Discover the Jardin des Serres d’Auteuil

Situated between the Bois de Boulogne and the Roland Garros Stadium, the Jardin de la Serre d'Auteuil is ideally placed to the west of Paris. You can walk there when you visit the nearby Louis Vuitton Foundation or reach it easily by public transport. The five historic greenhouses invite you to discover exceptional species, including more than 500 taxa of begonias, 120 kinds of ficus, palm trees, ferns and much more. Don’t miss the impressive Pterocarya stenoptera, the largest tree in the garden; the astonishing caramel tree and its sweet fragrance; and a beautiful Ginko Biloba. There’s also a large aviary and a pond where carp flourish. The large central parterre offers a magnificent view of the entire garden. Wander around freely, as there is plenty of information provided about the various plants displayed or, if you prefer, take a guided tour. Whatever the season, it’s a delightful experience!

The Jardin de la Serre d'Auteuil offers a wonderful opportunity to discover the richness of the world of plants. From the profusion of the tropical greenhouses to the elegant rigor of the French garden, diversity is given pride of place, all enhanced by the beautiful greenhouse architecture and the works of two of the greatest sculptors of the late 19th century. Explore this peaceful place during your stay at the Hotel Auteuil Tour Eiffel.
